Stump Grinding in Grand Island, NY

A stump is a trip hazard, a mower-breaker and a home for pests. We grind it below grade so the spot is level and ready for grass, mulch or a new tree.

When you need stump grinding

  • A stump left after a tree removal that you want gone
  • A stump in the lawn that is hitting the mower or tripping the kids
  • Stump sprouts and surface roots that keep coming back
  • A stump in the way of a patio, fence, shed or driveway
  • Carpenter ants, termites or fungus living in old wood

We use a compact stump grinder that fits through a standard gate and works around fences, patios and landscape beds. The grinder takes the stump and the major surface roots down well below the lawn line, then we rake the chips back into the hole.

You choose what happens to the wood chips: we can leave them for mulch or garden beds, haul them away, or backfill with topsoil so you can seed right away. If a stump is going to be replaced by another tree, tell us. We will grind deeper so the new root ball has room.

How we do it

  1. 1
Locate and markWe find buried lines, sprinkler heads and edges before the grinder starts.
  2. 2
Grind below gradeThe stump and large surface roots are ground to the depth you need.
  3. 3
BackfillChips are raked back in or removed. Topsoil can be added to level the spot.
  4. 4
Tidy upThe area is cleaned, ready for seed, sod or planting.

What affects the price

Stump grinding is priced mainly by stump diameter, the number of stumps on the property, and how many large surface roots need to come out. Several stumps at one visit cost much less per stump than a single call-out. If you are having a tree removed, ask for the grinding to be quoted with it.

FAQ

Stump Grinding FAQ

Straight answers before you pick up the phone.

Still have a question? Call us or send a message. A real person answers. (716) 599-8733 Send a message
How deep do you grind?

Typically 6 to 12 inches below grade, deeper if you are replanting a tree in the same spot.

What happens to the sawdust and chips?

Your choice: left as mulch, hauled away, or used to backfill the hole with topsoil on top.

Can you grind stumps near a fence or patio?

Yes. The grinder is compact and works close in. We will tell you before we start if something needs protecting.

Do you remove the roots too?

We grind the large surface roots that matter for lawn and landscaping. Deep roots are left to rot naturally, which is standard and does no harm.
